| Stage 2 - After the
cart body is made, the wheels are created involving the same skills as those
used for traditional horse drawn cart wheels. |

The wheels are hand-crafted
out of strong hard-wearing Native Ash in our workshop
using traditional methods.
The wheel's hubs are individually hand
turned, and then fitted with an axle box using an Oilite bearing.
The
spokes are then inserted into the hub allowing the felloe's to be hammered into
place forming the main part of the wheel.
A metal rim protects the wheel
from wear and damage and also acts to bind the components of the wheel
together.
The rim is first heated to
a 'red hot' temperature. Using water the metal is then rapidly cooled, causing
it to contract around the wheel. This pulls the spokes and felloes tightly
together around the hub and completes the wheel construction
process.
